Obituary

E. von Boeckmann, a former well known citizen of this county, died last Sunday night in a San Antonio hospital, following an illness of five years, caused from injuries sustained in an automobile-street car accident in 1913.

Decedent was born Aug. 8, 1851, in East Prussia, Germany. His mother died when he was eight years of age and in 1867, with his father and two brothers, sailed for America, landing at Indianola, thence to New Braunfels by mule team, where he resided for several years, and where in April, 1873[,] he was united in a marriage to Miss Emma Voigt, who preceded him in death on Sept. 13, 1897. To this union six children were born, three sons, E. H. von Boeckmann of this city, Chas. von Boeckmann of La Vernia and Herbert von Boeckmann of California, three daughters, Mrs. Edgar Fox and Mrs. Elmer Burnett of Austin. Mrs. W. C. Bruns, the other daughter, died March 29 of this year.

In the spring of 1909[sic] Mr. von Boeckmann was again married, Miss Clementine Elly of this [city] becoming his bride. To this union two sons, Eugene and Raymond von Boeckmann, and one daughter, Lillian, were born, all of whom survive.

Decedent is also survived by two brothers, Kurt von Boeckmann of Austin and Paul von Boeckmann of New York City.

Mr. von Boeckmann moved to Geronimo, this county, in 1877 where he engaged in farming and cotton ginning. In the latter business he soon established a reputation that became Statewide, his gin being one of the best equipped in the State. In 1903 he disposed of his ginning plant in Geronimo and moved to Seguin to assume the management of the Seguin Compress, which he successfully conducted until 1909, when he removed to Austin, where he resided until death.

In 1913 Mr. Boeckmann sustained injuries in an automobile-street car accident from which he never recovered, though the most eminent methods of skilled surgeons were employed and a trip to Europe made in search of relief. During the past few years he has been under the care of Dr. Adolph Herff of San Antonio.

Mr. von Boeckmann was a public spirited citizen, and always took a keen interest in the moral and commercial development of this country and city that he loved so well. He was instrumental in locating the Lutheran College at Seguin, and he contributed largely of his finances to that cause besides giving freely his counsel and his time in furthering the interest of that institution. He as an elder in the Lutheran church for years and his pastor, Rev. Roesner of Austin and Prof. W. Weber, president of the Lutheran College, each paid a beautiful tribute to the fidelity of this good man.

The remains were brought to Seguin Monday morning, the funeral occurring the following afternoon from the residence of E. H. von Boeckmann with burial in Riverside cemetery, Rev. Roesner and Prof. W. Weber conducting the religious services. The funeral procession was one of the largest ever seen in Seguin.

Active pall bearers were H. J. Blumberg, Robt. Blumberg, C. F. Tips, Alf. Koebig and Ferd Klein and W. A. Werner of Austin. Honorary pall bearers were Rudolph Tschoepe, Wm. Weinert, Joe Zorn, Chas. Bruns, J. R. Feigerle and Wm. Weinert.
